VICTORY CLUB: After neck surgery, a father & son find joy in the game again

When Matthew Conville’s son was born in 2013, the 38-year-old Kentuckian couldn’t wait to show his family’s new arrival the game of golf.

It’s a rite of passage for fathers & sons – instilling a love for golf in the next generation.

That was the dream for the Convilles – twilight 9’s on their neighborhood course, chipping and putting contests, and bonding time together.

In golf, as in life, even our best-laid plans sometimes don’t come to fruition.

After a household accident, the elder Conville underwent a fusion surgery to treat a serious neck injury.

A lasting effect of that injury?

Lack of grip strength due to nerve damage – not ideal for an avid golfer. It almost took the game away from him forever.

“I had almost quit playing altogether,” Conville said. “He could see that I wasn’t having fun and was frustrated all the time, and he was associating that golf was not fun.”

Not wanting to ruin the game for his son, Conville would tag along in the cart, playing caddy & coach. As his son, who first picked up a golf club at 2 years old, steadily improved, the golf bug started to return.

Finding The Perfect Golf Grip

If Conville was going to enjoy the game again, though, he needed to find a grip that would allow him to grip the club lightly & better feel the clubhead. It didn’t happen overnight.

“I tried all kinds of different grips,” Conville says. “I’d install them on my 7 and 9 irons to see if anything worked, but none did. The closest I got was the CP2 Midsize, but they weren’t ‘the one.’”

Enter the MCC Plus4 ALIGN.

“It was immediate with these grips,” Conville said. “All the others I tried, I gave them a couple range sessions and a round or two and knew it wasn’t it. The ball flight straightened out immediately and the feel of the club returned. I can set that ALIGN in the creases of my fingers and I get perfect alignment every time… It was almost like a match made in heaven.”

If I didn’t have these grips, I don’t know that I would enjoy playing. Your innovation doesn’t just bring the latest & greatest technology – it enables those who have limitations to be able to enjoy the game, too.

With his grips perfected, the joy is back for Conville – and so is the swing speed. And, he’s free to focus on what’s really important: Enjoying time with his son, in nature, away from the world.

“If I didn’t have these grips, I don’t know that I would enjoy playing.” Conville said. “Your innovation doesn’t just bring the latest & greatest technology – it enables those who have limitations to be able to enjoy the game, too.”
